(Lancaster, Pa.) – The Dickinson men and women's squash teams both had tough starts to the season in the opening round of the Second Annual Pennsylvania Cup.
The Red Devil men, ranked 18th in the Dunlop Preseason Poll, suffered a 9-0 setback to #11-ranked Drexel University. The #18 ranked Red Devil women fell to the #9 ranked Dragons, 9-0 as well.
Cory Litman (Lower Merion, Pa./Lower Merion) had a strong outing in the seventh flight, falling 3-2. He rallied from a 2-0 deficit to pull even before dropping the fifth 12-10, to close out a thrilling match (11-6, 12-10, 8-11, 10-12, 12-10).
Andrew Strudwick (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) had a great start in the eighth flight of a 3-1 setback. He won the opening set, 15-13, but Will Grady rallied with three close sets (11-9, 12-10, 11-9).
First-year Henry Smith (Haverford, Pa./Avon Old Farms) took a game from Royston Raymond in the six spot while Graham Henderson (Greenwich, Conn./The King School) and Zachary Hollander (Albany, N.Y./Millbrook) also claimed sets in the ninth and 10th flights.
The Red Devil women had a pair of first-years in the top two flights, turning in strong outings to start their collegiate careers. Lindsay Kuracina (Thorn Hill, Ontario, Canada/Lake Forest) went five sets in the number-two spot, falling (7-11, 7-11, 11-5, 11-3, 11-8).
First-year Courtney Trail (Palmerston North, N.Z./Palmerston North Girls School) dropped a 3-1 decision in the top spot (11-7,11-9,5-11,11-6).
The Dragons went 3-0 in the remainder of the flights. Senior Alanis Perez (New Haven, Conn./Canterbury School) turned in a strong challenge in the seventh flight as well.
The Red Devils return for the second round of the tournament on Sunday.
