(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson softball team split a Centennial Conference double-header on Senior Day Saturday, claiming a 3-1 win but dropping a 5-4 heartbreaker to McDaniel College.
The Red Devils scored twice in the first inning and added another in the second before they locked in on defense to claim the opener. Brigitte Gutpelet (Norristown, Pa./Penn Charter) and Kat Parise (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) sandwiched a pair of walks around a single and stolen base from senior Jessica Epstein (Madison, N.J./Madison), with Gutpelet and Epstein coming in to score on passed balls.
Epstein doubled to scored Gutpelet, who reached on a walk to stretch the lead to 3-0 in the second inning.
McDaniel scored one in the fifth as junior Madison Milaszewski (Rutland, Mass./Sutton) recorded seven strikeouts in a four-hit complete game victory.
The Green Terror scored three runs in the top of the seventh to overtake the Red Devils in game two, 5-4.
McDaniel scored lone runs in the fourth and fifth innings to lead 2-0. Gutpelet doubled to score classmate Kristen Acocella (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) and came in a single from Epstein to tie the game in the bottom half of the fifth.
Acocella doubled to score senior Nicole Clayton (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet Valley) and senior Alicia Lane (Sterling, Mass./Nashoba Regional) hit into an error to score Acocella and give the Red Devils a 4-2 lead.
Tori Wilkins triple to score Taylor Hishon and Alejandra Mata, and then came in on a single from Megan Coyle for the go-ahead run.
The Green Terror would hold in the bottom of the seventh to force the split with a 5-4 decision.
Acocella went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Parise went 3-for-4 and Gutpelet added two hits, one run and an RBI as well. Killian Kueny (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) recorded a pair of strikeouts before Milaszewski came on to record five in the final three innings, but suffered the loss. Epstein went 2-for-3 in the opener and added an RBI single in the nightcap.
The Red Devils remain even at 15-15 overall and move to 4-8 in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils are back in action on Sunday, hosting Haverford College in a 1:00 pm double-header at Dickinson Park.
