(Elizabethtown, Pa.) – The Dickinson softball team dropped a double-header at Elizabethtown College on its return to the east coast on Monday. The Blue Jays (12-2) held off the Red Devils 2-1 in the opener and scored four runs in the fourth inning to take the nightcap, 6-2.
Dickinson looked to rally in the top of the seventh of game one, trailing 2-0 going into the inning. The Red Devils loaded the bases and were able to produce one run but could not plate the equalizer.
Sarah Personette singled and scored the lone run in the fourth and doubled to set up Elizabethtown's second run in the sixth.
The Devils almost had a chance to tie as Brigitte Gutpelet (Norristown, Pa./William Penn Charter) forced an over-the-shoulder, diving catch at short, but the ball was not quite deep enough to move the runner.
First-year Lindsey Keller (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) went 2-for-3 as E'Town's Alyssa Wilkinson tossed a four-hitter in the opener.
The Red Devils had a strong start in game two, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning as Gutpelet doubled and scored, and senior Nicole Clayton (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet Valley) doubled to score classmate Jessica Epstein (Madison, N.J./Madison).
The Blue Jays countered with lone runs in the second and third innings, and pushed across four in the fourth to pull in front, 6-2. The score would hold as the Blue Jays improved to 12-2 on the season.
Gutpelet and Epstein each went 2-for-4 with a run scored in game two. First-year Kat Vill (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) recorded seven strikeouts in the setback.
The Red Devils slip to 9-5 on the season. They are on the road again on Thursday, traveling to Messiah College for a 3:00 pm double-header.
