(Fredericksburg, Va.) – The Dickinson men's tennis team has had a great showing at the 2018 ITA Southeast Regional Championships, playing at the University of Mary Washington this weekend.
Senior Derek Chen (Cranbury Township, Pa./Cranbury Township) and first-year Justin Pace (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) won the Flight A Doubles title, posting three wins before topping Haverford in a great final, 8-7(6).
Chen advanced to the semifinals of the men's C Flight singles with a pair of straight set wins before retiring in the second set, (2-6, 5-5). Pace had a win in Flight A singles before a tough 6-4, 6-4 loss in the quarters.
First-year Leonid Sorkin (St. Petersburg, Russia/University of Nebraska High School) earned a spot in the semifinals of the Division III Flight. He posted straight set wins in three matches, turning back Johns Hopkins' Aaron Carey (7-5, 6-0) and #2-seed Vishnu Joshi in three sets (6-0, 0-6, 6-2).
Sorkin partnered with classmate Sam Coan (Washington, D.C./Bullis) for an opening round win in doubles but suffered a second-round setback. Coan went 2-1 in Flights A singles, retiring in the semifinals in a (7-6, ret.) match.
Joey Bolanos (San Salvador, El Salvador/Escuela Americans) went 1-1 in Flight B singles and joined Andrew Lai (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater) to rebound for a consolation round win after falling in Flight A doubles.
Bryce Perritt (Allentown, Pa./Lawrenceville) and Vincent Tovar Dias (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) won the opener in Flight B doubles but fell in the semis, 8-3.
On Sunday. Sorkin, the #10-seed fell in a hard-fought match (6-3, 6-4) to Carnegie Mellon's #6-seed Chaz Downing in the semifinals.
