(Lancaster, Pa.) – The #3-seed Dickinson men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 setback in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference Championship on Saturday, falling to #2-seed and #3/4-ranked Johns Hopkins at Franklin & Marshall.
The Blue Jays, ranked third by the United Soccer Coaches and fourth in the D3soccer.com poll, struck once in each half to advance to Sunday's final against host Franklin & Marshall, holding the fourth and eighth spots in the latest rankings.
Hopkins capitalized on a penalty kick as Liam Creedon scored with 11 minutes remaining in the first half to put the Blue Jays on the scoreboard.
The Blue Jays added some insurance in the 50th minute as RJ Moore made his way to the end line and served an assist to Axel Whamond for a great opportunity in front of the net, stretching the lead to 2-0.
Play continued to be pretty much back and forth throughout the remainder of the match. The Red Devils were able to create some opportunities while Hopkins kept applying the pressure on the offensive end as well.
Senior Brendan McGovern (Burlington, Vt./Kimball Union Academy) countered almost immediately after the goal, putting a shot on net to force a save from Zander Lefevre. Kevin Gilbert (Boxford, Mass./Phillips Exeter Academy) got off three shots in a short span in the 75th minute, forcing a pair of saves from Lefevre as well.
The Blue Jays held a 22-15 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in corners on the afternoon.
Lefevre finished with four saves while senior Frederick Meagher (Southport, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) made five saves in the nets for Dickinson.
The Red Devils finish 10-8 on the year.
