(Carlisle, Pa.) - The Dickinson College men's and women's soccer programs have been honored as 2018-19 United Soccer Coaches Association Team Academic Award winners. A total of 345 men's college programs and 644 women's college programs were honored with this distinction, announced on Thursday.
The award recognizes teams that maintain grade point averages of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. The United Soccer Coaches Association Team Academic Award honors teams based on their performances from the previous academic year.
Dickinson is one of 255 schools that had both its men's and women's team honored with this award. The Centennial Conference saw four schools with both the men's and women's programs recognized as Haverford, Swarthmore and Washington College received honors for both as well.
Both the men's and women's programs have had strong starts to the 2019 season. The men opened the year with back-to-back wins to capture the title in the Brothers Pizza Blue Jay/Red Devil Classic and started conference play with a big win over, then previously unbeaten Swarthmore College.
The Red Devils stand at 5-5 overall and 2-1 in the conference. They had another strong outing on Wednesday night, going toe-to-toe on the road at #4-ranked Franklin & Marshall.
The Red Devil women ran its unbeaten record to 6-0-3 before a top-20 showdown on Wednesday night saw #1-ranked Messiah College escape with a hard-fought 1-0 decision.
The Red Devils, now ranked 19th in both, broke into the top 25 on the United Soccer Coaches and D3soccer.com national polls last week. They played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw with #4-ranked Christopher Newport and handed #12-ranked Swarthmore a 1-0 defeat, scoring in overtime to claim the conference opener back on September 21.
Both teams are home this weekend as the women host Ursinus College at 2:00 pm, followed by the men facing the Bears at 4:30 pm on Miller Memorial Field.
