(Lynchburg, Va.) – The Dickinson men's soccer team came up short in wild match at the University of Lynchburg on Friday night. The Red Devils jumped out to 2-0 lead but the hosts would battle back and eventually come away with a 4-3 decision.
Sophomore Mohamed Kourouma (New Haven, Conn./Wilbur Cross) drew a penalty kick, with just under 30 minutes to play in the first half and senior Ward Van de Water (Warrenton, Va./Highland) converted into the corner of the net to put the Red Devils on the board.
The Hornets had a chance to net the equalizer, breaking behind the defense but the shot went just wide of the post.
First-year Frederick Cisse (New Haven, Conn./Pomfret School) made a great play, taking the ball off the foot of the Lynchburg goalkeeper and putting the ball in the empty cage, late in the first half to double the Red Devil lead to 2-0.
The Hornets would pull even as Abibi Osman scored back-to-back goals, including a well-placed bicycle kick in the 58th minute.
Frederick Meagher (Southport, Conn./Fairfield-Ludlowe) turned away a dangerous strike with 26 minutes to play in regulation. The Red Devils countered and Kourouma had a great chance but that was saved as well to keep the match level.
Van de Water put away a rebound for his second goal of the game, putting the Red Devils back in front with 24 minutes remaining. It would be short-lived as Osman completed the hat-trick in the 72nd minute to knot the match, 3-3.
Ben Mackey would tally the game-winner, capitalizing on a header off the post and a scramble in front of the net.
Meagher made some spectacular saves throughout the match, finishing with 10 on the night. Dylan McLaurin made two saves for Lynchburg as they improve to 3-0 on the season.
The Red Devils slip to 1-1-1 on the year. They return to action tomorrow, facing Roanoke College at Lynchburg with a 5:00 pm kick-off.
