(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's soccer team captured the Brothers Pizza Blue Jay/Red Devil Classic tournament title with a 4-2 victory over Keystone College on Saturday.
The Red Devils played to a 1-1 draw with Babson on Friday night while Keystone turned back Elizabethtown, 4-3. Babson and Elizabethtown played to a draw on Saturday to lift the Red Devils.
Dickinson put the pressure on early, making a strong attack as Kevin Gilbert (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet Regional) and Ward Van de Water (Warrenton, Va./Highland) fired off shots at the net, leading to an own goal by the visiting Giants.
Carlos Bonilla placed a nice shot in the upper left corner to knot the game in the 29th minute.
The teams battled through the midfield while the Red Devils were able to generate two more goals before the half. First-year Frederick Cisse (New Haven, Conn./Pomfret School) found Van de Water with a beautifully placed through-ball on the left side to put Dickinson back in front.
Cisse added a goal of his own in the 41st minute to five the Devils a 3-1 advantage at the break.
Keystone kept its composure and continued to grind, capitalizing on a well-struck serve from Bonilla to Harrinson Cordoba on the back post to cut the deficit to 3-2 in the 57th minute.
Gilbert gave the Devils some breathing room as he finished a great ball from sophomore Colin Fagan (Chalfont, Pa./C.B. South) with 29 minutes to play.
That would close out the scoring but not before junior goaltender Frederick Meagher (Southport, Conn./Fairfield-Ludlowe) turned away some quality shots from Keystone to secure the win.
Meagher finished with eight saves on the night while Erick Gomez tallied four.
The Red Devils improve to 1-0-1 on the season. They travel to Virginia next weekend to face Lychnburg College on Friday and then Roanoke on Saturday afternoon.
