(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's soccer team erupted for eight goals on Saturday to post a decisive 8-2 victory over Morrisville State (N.Y.) in the second round of the Blue Jay/Red Devil Classic, hosted in conjunction with Elizabethtown College.
The Red Devils spent the opening minutes feeling out the Mustangs but quickly became offensive minded as senior Matt Edmonds (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) fed a great pass into the middle. Brian Gilbert (Boxford, Mass./Masconemet Regional) let the ball through to a cutting Brendan McGovern (Burlington, Vt./Kimball Union Academy) who ripped the ball into the back of the net in the 12th minute.
Gilbert found Edmonds in the 24th minute before McGovern collected a rebound and tallied his second goal of the game for a 3-0 advantage, with 17:10 to play in the half.
Sophomore Mohammed Kane (New Haven, Conn./Wilbur Cross) stretched the margin to 4-0 with an assist from first-year Ian Logan (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) with just under 13 minutes on the clock.
The Mustangs capitalized on a corner as Jose Figueroa got a good look from the top of the penalty area and hit a quality shot into the net to make the score, 4-1, at the break.
First-year Colin Fagan (Chalfont, Pa./C.B. South) found the net twice in a span of just 1:28 to open the second half. Ward Van de Water (Warrenton, Va./Highland) assisted the first while Edmonds and Logan each added another on the second.
Morrisville used a set piece to net its second goal of the game as Kossi Phillipe Nodjo scored on a nice serve from Julian Rodriguez.
Dickinson tacked on two more goals in the final 13 minutes as first-year Max Matsumoto (New York, N.Y./New York Lab School) tallied his first collegiate goal before Logan close things out to make the final, 8-2.
Cody Welkey made seven saves in the nets for Morrisville as they slip to 0-2 on the season. Frederick Meagher (Southport, Conn./Fairfeild-Ludlow) recorded one save while Maxwell Barrett (East Andover, N.H./Proctor Academy) came on to stop both shots he faced in the final 28 minutes.
The Red Devils improve to 2-0 on the season. They are home again next weekend, hosting Lycoming College at 12:00 pm on Saturday and facing Gordon 12:00 pm on Sunday.
