(Carlisle, Pa.) - Dickinson College has announced the winners of the 2017-18 McAndrews Award. Voted on by members of the athletic department, the honor is one of the most prestigious bestowed upon a Red Devil student-athlete. In addition to being outstanding students and athletes, the recipients possess strong leadership qualities, high character, demonstrate good sportsmanship, and serve as positive role models.
The award is presented in honor of Richard H. McAndrews, Doctor of Physical Education and beloved member of the Dickinson College faculty from 1911-1961. The award is based on the performance of the given academic year.
This year, the women's award goes to 2018 graduate Sofia Canning '18 (Portland, Maine/Waynflete). Canning capped a truly brilliant career with an amazing year in cross county, and indoor and outdoor track & field. Earlier this month she was named to the Centennial Conference Silver Anniversary Team for cross country. She earned First-team All-Centennial Conference recognition in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and ran to All-Mideast Region honors in 2015, 2016 and 2017 as well. She captured an individual title at the Little Three Championship in 2016 and led the Red Devils to the NCAA National Championships in 2015, 2016 and 2017.
Canning added multiple All-Conference and All-Region honors in track & field, qualifying for the NCAA National Championships, outdoors in 2017, and both indoor and outdoor in 2018. During the 2017-18 indoor season, she was First-team All-Centennial and the conference champion in the 5,000 meters, earning All-Region honors for the second straight year (3K and 5K in 2017) and qualifying for the NCAA Championships. She set the school record in the 5,000 with a time of 17:09.74.
During her final outdoor campaign, she ran to Second-Team All-Conference in the 10,000 meters for the second straight year. She earned her second straight All-Region honor as well and another trip to the NCAA Championships. She also received individual and team recognition on the UST&FCCCA All-Academic Squads.
Canning received team MVP honors for all three seasons. She led the Red Devils to a second-place showing at the Centennial Conference Championships in cross country and finished third in the team standings at both the 2018 indoor and outdoor track & field championships.
The 2017-18 male award winner is two-time All-American Dylan Maher '18 (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield). Maher also had a brilliant senior season to cap a remarkable career with the men's lacrosse program. The Red Devils broke program records with 288 goals, 166 assists and 454 points on the year, going 17-4 overall while capturing the 2018 Centennial Conference Championship and advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.
Maher led the charge, becoming the program's career and single season scoring leader, netting a conference-best 70 goals this spring to finish with a school record 141. He finished sixth in career points with 171, adding 30 assists to his resume. Maher was voted the Team MVP and presented with the Ironman Award following his senior season. He was selected to play in the USILA/Nike Senior All-Star Game.
He made his second straight appearance on the All-America roster, earning honorable mention in 2017 and Second-team honors this past spring. He was a First-team Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Coaching Association (IMLCA) All-Region selection in 2018 after being named Second-team in 2017. Maher is a three-time All-Centennial Conference selection, earning First-team in 2017 and 2018.
