(Gettysburg, Pa.) – The Dickinson field hockey team went blow for blow with host Gettysburg on Saturday, but the Bullets would capitalize on a penalty stroke in overtime to escape with a 3-2 decision and claim the final Centennial Conference playoff spot.
Emma Bertando put the Bullets on the board first, scoring just over three minutes into the second quarter.
The Red Devils countered with 2:56 remaining in the half as Emma Godfrey (Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek) scored off an assist from Mia Scott (Mount Laurel, N.J./Holy Cross) to pull Dickinson even at the break.
Dickinson outshot the hosts, 7-1, in the third quarter but were unable to net the goal ahead goal.
Gettysburg would regain the lead, just over two minutes into the fourth on a goal from Julia Soares, finding a loose ball in the circle.
The Red Devils tied the game on a penalty stroke as sophomore Hannah Spiri (Morgantown, Pa./Twin Valley) converted with 3:48 remaining in regulation to force overtime.
The heartbreak came just 1:37 into overtime as the Red Devils were flagged for a stroke and Bertando would net the game-winner.
The match was equally as even, statistically, as each team forced seven corners while the Red Devils held a slim advantage in shots, 13-11.
Senior Heather Meeder (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) made four saves for the Red Devils while Jillian Caputo stopped six shots and got the help of a defensive save from Sam Nicol.
The Red Devils finish 9-8 overall and 5-5 in the Centennial Conference.
