(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson field hockey team jumped out to 1-0 lead but visiting Denison University answered with a pair of goals to win the season opener, 2-1, on Friday afternoon.
The Red Devils put a goal on the board in the eighth minute of the match as sophomore Sydney Engler (Boyertown, Pa./Oley Valley) collected a rebound off a shot from junior Maddie Dombroski (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) and found the back of the cage for a 1-0 advantage.
The Big Red capitalized on a penalty corner as Charlotte Godfrey scored off an insert from AC Veeth with under a minute to play in the first half.
Denison tallied the game-winner after a scramble in the front of the cage as Maya Tumiwa found Caroline Little with six minutes to play in the third quarter.
Both defenses turned in solid performances as Denison held just an 11-8 edge in shots and forced three corners while the Red Devils produced a pair on the afternoon.
Senior Heather Meeder (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) turned away five shots on the day, including beautiful stick save in the second half.
Teya Adams made seven saves in the nets for Denison.
The Red Devils return to action on Wednesday, traveling to York College of Pa. for a 6:00 pm start.
