(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson field hockey team closed out the regular season with a thriller on Senior Day at Biddle Field. The Red Devils rallied from a 1-0 deficit, scoring twice in less than a minute to overtake visiting Gettysburg College, 2-1, and advance to the Centennial Conference playoffs next week.
The teams played a back-and-forth battle from the start. Junior goalkeeper Heather Meeder (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) was tested early, turning away five shots in the first half.
The Bullets were able to break through with seven minutes to go before the break as Julia Soares finished an assist from Emma Bertando to put Gettysburg up, 1-0.
The Bullets forced a penalty corner right out of the gate to start the second half but Meeder rose to the challenge, making back-to-back saves in the early minutes.
The Red Devils continued to battle and would finally capitalize as first-year Sierra Bobb (Dornsife, Pa./Line Mountain) tallied the equalizer with just 2:10 remaining in the game.
It took less than a minute for Dickinson to use the momentum to find sophomore Marie Laverdiere (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) to net the game-winner with just over a minute to play to lift the Red Devils to the win.
Meeder had a solid second half as well, finishing with 10 saves on the afternoon. She received strong support from her defense as well with Jillian Beemon (Ann Arbor, Mich./Skyline) and Emily Mycek (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) each picking up a defensive save for the Red Devils.
Dickinson improves to 6-11 overall and more importantly, moves to 5-5 in the Centennial Conference to secure the number five seed after Muhlenberg defeated Washington College, 3-2, on Saturday as well.
