(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson field hockey team opened the Centennial Conference season with a 3-1 win over visiting Swarthmore College on Saturday at Biddle Field.
The Red Devils jumped on the board early as Emma Godfrey (Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek) put one in the back of the cage, just 2:13 into the match.
The lead held through halftime and the Red Devils tallied a pair of goals in the 55th and 57th minutes.
Dickinson scored on a well-executed penalty corner as Marie Laverdiere (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) finished with assists from insert Emily Mycek (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) and Taylor Bednar (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) to make the score 2-0.
Godfrey added an assist to classmate Maddie Dombroski (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) to give the Red Devils some insurance down the stretch.
The Garnet continued to battle and would cut the deficit to 3-1, just minutes later as sophomore Halsey Hutchinson slipped one through 11:45 remaining.
The Red Devils would close out the match as they improved to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in the Centennial Conference.
Dickinson outshot the Garnet, 24-7 and held a 6-4 advantage in penalty corners. Junior Heather Meeder (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) finished with four saves to earn the win. Swarthmore's Zelda Bank turned away 15 shots on the day.
