(Winter Haven, Fla.) – The Dickinson baseball team continued its strong start, improving to 6-1 on the year with a 12-7 win over Fitchburg State on Monday. The Red Devils scored runs in each of the first four innings and added some insurance in the seventh and eighth to earn the win. They pounded out 17 hits on the day, including four doubles and a homerun.
Ben Carter (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyoming Area) led-off with a single and moved to third on a wild pitch and a passed ball. He came in to score off the bat of Max Matilsky (Bernardsville, N.J./Morristown-Beard) to give the Red Devils a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
The Red Devils strung together six straight hits in the bottom of the second, producing five more runs to extend the lead to 6-0.
Alex Jacobson (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) continued his hot start, leading off the inning with a single. He moved to third on a double from Max Brown (Annapolis, Md./McDonogh School) and they both scored on a single from catcher Chris Delsandro (Chatham, N.J./Chatham).
The Red Devils kept the bats going as back-to-back doubles from Carter and Joey Volpe (Wall, N.J./St. Rose) pushed across two more runs and Matilsky added a single to score Volpe, stretching the margin to 6-0.
Jacobson and Delsandro singled in the third and both came around to score on a two-RBI single from Volpe. Dickinson tallied two singles in the fourth and loaded the bases to set up another RBI for Delsandro for a 9-0 lead.
Vincent Eramo singled in two runs and scored on a wild pitch to put Fitchburg on the board in the top of the fifth inning. The Falcons tacked on two runs in the sixth, loading the bases to score on a fielder's choice on a single from Timothy Horton as Eramo crossed the plate for the second time on the day, making the score 9-5.
Dickinson had opportunities to add to the lead in the bottom of the sixth, but stranded runners on second and third. They would, however, tally another in the seventh as Matilsky walked, stole second and scored on a single from Cohen to stretch the advantage to 10-5.
Horton tallied another RBI single in the eighth inning, but the Red Devils responded in the bottom of the inning as Ian Beumee (Denville, N.J./Morristown-Beard) launched a homer in his first collegiate at-bat, driving in two runs with two outs to make the score, 12-6. Matilsky kept the things going with a double down the line but would be stranded on third.
Eramo added another RBI single in the top of the ninth for the final of 12-7.
Volpe led the charge, going 2-for-5 while driving in three runs on the afternoon. Matilsky went 3-for-5, adding a walk, two RBIs and a run scored. Carter, Jacobson, Brown and Delsandro each recorded two hits and two runs scored while Delsandro added two RBIs and a walk.
Sophomore Connor Langan (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) went 4.1 innings to earn the win, recording four strikeouts and scattering five hits. Cohen came on in the eighth to record a pair of strikeouts and close out the final four outs.
