Volleyball Splits in Opening Round at Rowan

(Glassboro, N.J.) – The Dickinson volleyball team opened the Rowan University Invitational with a thrilling, five-set victory over Keystone College on Friday night. The Red Devils jumped out to a 2-0 lead but the Giants responded, surviving two close games, (25-22, 25-23), to tie the match.

The Red Devils regrouped to outlast Keystone, 16-14, in the fifth to win the match. Senior Norma Jean Park (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) led the attack with 13 kills and three blocks while first-year Jamie Singer (Livingston, N.J./Golda Och) reached double-figures with 11 kills, adding 14 digs on the night.

First-year Kristin Allgaier (Reston, Va./South Lakes) dished out 34 assists and recorded eight service aces to match the third-highest single match total in program history. Classmate Tatiana Lopez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico / Colegio Puertorriqueno de Ninas) led the Devils with 16 digs.

Seniors Lauren Beecher (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) and Erin Bongo (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) combined for 16 kills while Bongo added three aces.

The Red Devils turned in another strong performance in the nightcap, but fell to host Rowan, 3-1. The scores were close throughout the match with the Profs slipping away in game one, 26-24. Rowan took a 2-0 lead with a 24-20 decision in the second before Dickinson rallied to capture the third set, 25-21.

The hosts led early in the fourth but the Red Devils answered and trailed by one, 12-11. Rowan started to pull away and closed out the set, 25-14.

Park reached double-figures again with 11 kills while Beecher and Bongo each tallied five. First-year Jordyn Park (Great Falls, Va./Flint Hill) added seven while classmate Alex Musi (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) chipped in with five as well.

Allgaier handed out 22 assists and Alex Berezan (Surrey, B.C./Earl Marriott Secondary) added 14. Lopez tallied 22 digs to close out the night.

The Red Devils move to 4-2 on the season. They are in action again on Saturday, facing Gettysburg College at 10:00 am and Widener University at 12:00 pm.
