(St. Mary's City, Md.) – The Dickinson women's volleyball team opened the 2014 season with some strong play, but suffered a pair of losses at St. Mary's College in Maryland. The Red Devils dropped a pair of 3-0 decisions, but played strong sets in each match.
Shenandoah claimed the opener, winning (25-18, 25-22, 25-17). The Red Devils trailed just 18-15, before a 7-3 run closed out the first set. The Hornets jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the second, but the Devils answered and pulled in front, 13-10.
Shenandoah responded with a 10-3 run and held on for a 25-22 decision. A 7-0 stretch in the third set put the Hornets in front, 13-6. The extended the margin to 10, and claimed the match with 24-17 final set.
Junior Emily Smith (Victor, N.Y./Victor) led the Red Devils with nine kills and four digs. First-years Lauren Beecher (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) and Gillian Chan (Brooklyn, N.Y./Poly Prep Country Day) tallied seven kills while Chan added three blocks.
Junior Jenn Morrissey (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) dished out 30 assists, adding a pair of kills in the opener. First-year Norma Jean Park (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) added six kills while classmate Erin Bongo (Rockaway, N.Y./Morris Knolls) chipped in with five digs.
Dickinson had an even stronger showing in the early going against host St. Mary's College. The Devils dropped the nightcap (25-23, 25-22, 25-11).
The Seahawks built a five point lead before the Devils cut the deficit to 20-17. Chan and Beecher combined for a block to pull Dickinson within one, 22-21. St. Mary's scored twice to lead 24-21 before back-to-back kills from Lauren Ahern (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) and Beecher pulled the Devils back from the brink. The Seahawks secured the final point to take the set.
The second set was similar at St. Mary's pulled in front, 18-13, before the Devils answered. Dickinson scored on eight straight serves from Morrissey to take a 21-20 lead. Smith tallied four kills in the run as well.
The teams traded points to put Dickinson up, 22-21. The hosts captured four straight points to claim the second set.
St. Mary's used a 6-0 run to gain some momentum in the third set, and pulled in front, 22-10, with a 7-3 clip to close out the match, 25-11.
Smith added 10 kills and 12 digs in the nightcap while Morrissey recorded 27 assists and nine digs. Ahern, Beecher and Chan each tallied five kills while Arielle Misrok (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) added five digs. Chan and Ahern each tallied three blocks as well.
Smith and Morrissey were both named to the All-Tournament team.
The Red Devils travel to Susquehanna University next weekend for the Hampton Inn/Crusader Classic.
