Devil Women Capture Home Holiday Invite
by Dennis Young
The Dickinson College women's track & field team continued its strong start to the indoor season at the Holiday Invitational on campus in the Kline Center.
First-year Olivia Schumann (Manorville, N.Y./Bishop McGann Mercy) had perhaps the best day individually: she cleared 5 feet, half an inch to win the high jump, ran 27.48 to finish second in the 200, and carried the stick on the winning 4x200 meters. The other three legs of that relay were junior Vivian Butali (Silver Spring, Md./National Cathedral) and first-year Heather Geist (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) and Willa Davis (Grass Valley, Calif./Bear River).
The veteran Butali continued her role as the Swiss Army knife of the women's track team, as in addition to the 4x2, she competed well in the triple jump (3rd), 55 meters (12th), and long jump (5th). Also doing four events was senior Ellie Mackintosh (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park), who finished just ahead of Butali in the vertical jumps. Her primary event, though, is the pole vault, where she tied classmate Hannah Leahey (Mercer Island, WA/Mercer Island) with a mark of exactly 10 feet (3.05 meters).
In the distances, just three weeks after competing at the cross-country national championship, the Dickinson women acquitted themselves quite well. Senior Catherine Campbell (Carlisle, PA/Trinity) won the 5000 meters by an incredible 70 seconds.
In the 3k, sophomores Taylor Ludman (Willow Street, Pa./Solanco) and Sara Patterson (Houston, Texas/St. Johns School) went 1-2 in 10:36.10 and 10:52.58. Patterson's time was a five-second PR.
Finally, the Red Devils had four of the top five finishers in the mile. Sophomore Kelly McIntyre (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) threw down a 2:35 final 800 to win the race after a pedestrian first half (the mile is 1,609 meters long). Behind her, teammates Emily Miller (Lenhartsville, Pa./Kutztown), Annie Dyroff (Wayne, Pa./Radnor), and Julie McTernan (Needham, Mass./Needham) took third through fifth places. Their times were 5:30.79, 5:31.31, and 5:34.79, respectively.
The Red Devils now enter a seven week hiatus from competition, as they will be training through finals week, winter break, and a team trip to Florida. Their next meet is at Susquehanna on January 22nd.
