(Carlisle, Pa.) – The #19-ranked Dickinson women's squash team welcomed #23 St. Lawrence University to the Kline Center Courts on Sunday, sweeping the Saints, 9-0.
The teams, meeting for the first time, were playing for the inaugural Saints-Devils Cup, presented to the team with the most combined wins for men and women. With the SLU men posting a 9-0 win, the tie-break went to the team with the fewest sets lost. St. Lawrence edged the Red Devils by just one to start the tradition.
The Red Devils had a solid start, jumping out to a 2-0 lead with three-set wins in fourth and sixth flights. Aya Sobhy (Stroudsburg, Pa./Blair Academy) won the match at four, going (11-9, 11-5, 11-7) while Carley Barton (Harare, Zimbabwe/Chisipite) had a strong finish to claim the sixth (11-6, 11-9, 11-1).
Meagan Dashcund (South Hamilton, Mass./Phillips Exeter Academy) celebrated senior day with a decisive win in exhibition, posting an (11-2, 11-1, 11-4) decision. Classmate Stuart Lemay (Harwich Port, Mass./Westover School, Conn.) outlasted Allie Brazo in the five spot, (11-8,7-11,11-9,11-8).
Domenica Romo (Ambato, Ecuador/Colegio Atenas) and Alexis Perez (New Haven, Conn./Canterbury School) added straight set victories in the number two and number nine flights while Abbie Wingerd (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) survived a five-set match at number eight to put the Red Devils up, 5-0.
Eloise Nimoityn (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Episcopal Academy) and Jaime Leigh Edghill (Deigo, Martin, Trinadad-Tobago/Holy Name) added straight set wins, and Hedvika Suchankova (Olomouc, Czech Republic/St. Michael's) won the top flight, 3-0, as well.
The Red Devils conclude the regular season schedule and will now prepare for the College Squash Association team nationals at Harvard University on February 16-18.
