Tyrrell Named Coach of the Year, Four Devils Earn All-CC Honors
(Carlisle, Pa.) - The Dickinson College women's soccer team earned four spots on the 2010 All-Centennnial Conference team, announced on Monday. In addition, head coach Kelly Tyrrell was voted as the Coach of the Year.
Three Red Devils were named to the First-team. Senior Ashley Kunkle (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) was a First-team selection in the midfield, joined by forward Genevieve Olson (Quincy, Mass./Thayer Academy) and sophomore goaltender Annie Weichert (Chatham, N.J./Chatham). Sophomore Marissa Kunkle (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) was voted Second-team for her play on defense.
Olson returns to the First-team, earning the honor in 2009 as well. She led the Red Devils in scoring with 10 goals and five assists, leading the Centennial in game-winners with five on the year. Ashley Kunkle was a dominant force in the midfield, serving as one of the main playmakers for the Devils, both on offense and defense. She tallied four goals, including two game-winners.
Marissa Kunkle anchored an outstanding defensive effort this season while Weichert had an exceptional year in the net. The Red Devils set school records with 13 shutouts this season, including a school-best seven straight. Weichert posted a remarkable 0.75 goals-against-average while the team currently holds a 0.72 GAA overall. Weichert tallied a conference-best nine solo shutouts, ranking second on the school single season list.
Marissa proved to be a dangerous scoring threat out of the defensive end, scoring five goals and handing out five assists. She tallied three game-winners on the year as well.
Dickinson (15-3-1, 9-1 CC) captured the regular season conference title and advanced to the championship game for the third straight year. The Red Devils set another school record, winning 12 consecutive games this season. They earned a bid to the NCAA playoffs and will host the first and second rounds on November 13th and 14th at Dickinson Park. The Red Devils will face Centenary College at 11:00 am on Saturday while Stevens Institute of Technology is set to face William Paterson University in the other first round match-up.
