Morrissey Trick Leads Devils Past Bears 14-6

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's lacrosse team improved to 2-0 in the Centennial Conference and 7-2 overall, turning back visiting Ursinus College 14-6, on Saturday.

The Red Devils went on the offensive from the opening draw, scoring five unanswered goals to start the game. Junior Carly O'Brien (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton Day) put Dickinson on the board, just 2:16 into the contest, making a great dodge for an unassisted goal.

Sophomore Sydney Stern (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) found classmate Jennifer Morrissey (Our Lady of Good Counsel) in front of the cage, less than a minute later, to put the Devils in front, 2-0.

First-year Maddy Siebold (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) and Morrissey sandwiched a pair of free position goals around another unassisted tally from O'Brien to stretch the margin to 5-0, with 22:16 remaining in the first half.

Sophomore Devin Brakel broke up the run, converting a free position at the 21:36 mark. Sophomore Katie Iverson (Marblehead, Mass./Pingree School) answered with a free position for the Devils before Brakel struck with back-to-back goals to make the score, 6-3, with 12:22 remaining in the half.

Junior Kelly Haglund (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart) drew a foul and put a free position into the back of the net at the 10:15 mark, and Seibold finished a beautiful feed from first-year Allison Carey (Weston, Conn./Lauralton Hall) to extend the lead to 8-3.

The Bears' Emma Ebert tallied the seventh combined free position goal, with just five seconds to play in the half, cutting the deficit to 8-4 at the break.

The Devils struck quickly again to open the second half. Morrissey finished another assist from Stern, just 38 seconds after the draw. Less than two minutes later, Stern struck again, this time off an assist from Siebold, for a 10-4 Dickinson advantage.

The Red Devils stretched the lead to 12-4 behind a goal from sophomore captain Caroline Clancy (Monkton, Md./Hereford), off an assist from first-year Sophie Waine (Wellesley, Mass./Greenwich), and another free position goal from Iverson with 19:47 to play in the game.

Ebert found net on a free position shot with 17:24 on the clock. The scoring then stalled for almost 12 minutes before Jayme Verman put in a goal for the Bears to make the score 12-6, with just under six minutes to play.

Dickinson closed out the scoring with two more goals in the final 3:37. Haglund converted her second free position attempt and then fed Stern for the final tally with 33 seconds remaining for the final of 14-6.

Morrissey led the attack with a hat-trick while Stern finished with two goals and two assists on the day. Six Red Devils scored multiple goals while sophomore captian Moira Mahoney (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) anchored another solid defensive effort with four ground balls and four draw controls.

Junior goaltender JoJo Auerbach (Chevy Chase, Md./Bullis School) earned the win in the nets for Dickinson, making three saves in the first half. Tara Cuddihy (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) came on for the second half, stopping a pair of shots in strong combined effort.

Brakel led Ursinus (5-3, 1-1) with three goals while Ebert finished with a pair. Margaret Philbin made seven saves for the Bears.

Dickinson (7-2, 2-0 CC) is scheduled to travel to #6-ranked Gettysburg College on Wednesday. Opening draw is set for 4:00 pm.
