(Clermont, Fla.) – The Dickinson women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Stevenson University, 11-8, at the National Training Center on Thursday morning.
The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first goal of the game, just 47 seconds into the contest. Kathryn Merrick put Stevenson on the board, then dished out an assist to Mandy Marston, less than a minute later to double the score.
Tori Wagner converted a free position attempt to stretch the lead to, 3-0, with 28:09 remaining in the first half.
The Red Devils answered with back-to-back goals in a span of just 18 seconds. Maddy Siebold (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) stuck first before Carly O'Brien (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton Day) scored off an assist from Katie Iverson (Marblehead, Mass./Pingree School) to cut the lead to one.
Merrick responded at the 25:46, mark, finishing an assist from Wagner. Sophomore Jennifer Morrissey (Rockville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) put one in the net, scoring off an assist from classmate Sydney Stern (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane), with just over 22 minutes remaining in the half.
The stalled the scoring until the 6:49 mark when Leah Warner found the net to make the score, 5-3. The Red Devils struck twice to pull even at the break, 5-5. Sophomore Caroline Clancy (Monkton, Md./Hereford) put one between the pipes, with 5:30 remaining, and Seibold tied the game with 3:55 to play in the first half.
The teams traded goals over the opening six minutes of the second half. Marissa Meiklejohn capitalized on a man-up opportunity, scoring off a free position, 1:40 after the break.
Morrissey returned the favor, feeding Stern at the 27:12, mark, to knot the game at 6-6. Warner and O'Brien traded tallies to raise the ante to 7-7, with 24:32 remaining in the game.
Marston took over from that point, scoring the next three goals, including two off assists from Warner, to give the Mustangs a 10-7 advantage with 6:15 to play in the game.
Siebold found twine on a free position with 1:16 remaining, but Stevenson would hold on, scoring a final goal with no time remaining for the final of 11-8.
Marston led all scorers with four goals while Warner finished with two goals and three assists. Leanne Bittner made 13 saves for Stevenson as they improve to 4-4 on the season.
Siebold led the Devils with a hat-trick, adding a pair of caused turnovers and two ground balls. Sophomore Moira Mahoney (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) turned in another strong performance, controlling a game-high seven ground balls.
JoJo Auerbach (Chevy Chase, Md./Bullis School) made 10 saves in the nets for Dickinson. The Red Devils slip to 5-1 on the season. They are scheduled to return home and face York College on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
