Red Devils Roll in Season Opener 17-3

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College women's lacrosse team struck early and often in its 2011 season opener on Thursday. The Red Devils scored 11 unanswered goals en route to a 17-3 win over visiting Lycoming College.

 

Senior captain Sunnie Ko (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) put the Devils on the board 3:41 into the contest with the first of her three goals of the half. First-year Lauren Jonas (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) tallied her first two collegiate goals with assists from Ko and sophomore Kara Glazer (Towson, Md./Towson) to give the Devils a 3-0 lead at the 23 minute mark.

 

Glazer dished out all four of her assists in the first half as the Devils held a 14-1 lead at the break. Nine Devils found the net in the opening half with senior captain Kelsey Muir (Glen Mills, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) and junior Taryn Abbassian (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) each scoring twice.

 

The Red Devils eased off the accelerator in the second half as Lycoming sandwiched a pair of goals around three Red Devil tallies after the break.

 

Overall 13 Red Devils found their way into the scoring column with a goal or assist. Ko led the way with three goals and two assists while Glazer finished with a goal and four helpers on the day. Abbassian and Muir each added two goals and an assist while Abbassian controlled four draws as well.

 

Senior captain Jessie Clark (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) made three saves on the first half while sophomore Amanda Morse (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) came on to face three shots in the second half.

 

Meagan Pittius led Lycoming (0-1) with a pair of goals while Libby Stoesz made 12 saves in goal.

 

The Red Devils held a 34-8 advantage in shots, forcing 24 turnovers on the day and holding a 13-9 edge in draw controls.

 

The Red Devils travel to Messiah College for a 1:00 start on Saturday. They return home to face Susquehanna University on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
