(Gettysburg, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team suffered an 85-52 setback at Gettysburg College on Wednesday night.
The Bullets jumped out to an early 8-1 advantage before the Red Devils settled in and later cut the deficit to just four on a Mackenzie Skerritt (Hightstown, N.J./The Peddie School) three-pointer, making the score 15-11.
The Bullets stretched the lead to 10 at the end of the first quarter, leading 23-13.
Gettysburg would build on its lead in the second quarter. Lauren McBride (Trenton, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) came on and hit a three-pointer and Kassidy Lesher (Shoemakersville, Pa./Hamburg) converted a three-point play on back-to-back possessions as the Red Devils looked to answer.
The Bullets put together a 7-0 run to stretch the lead to 39-21, with just under four minutes remaining in the half. Gettysburg led 44-21 before a strong move from Hannah Heiring (Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata) broke up the run.
The Bullets took a 49-25 lead into halftime, led by 11 points each from Ashley Gehrin and Emily Gibbons. Lesher led the Red Devils with eight points at the break, going 4-for-6 from the free throw line while blocking a pair of shots.
Skerritt knocked down a three-pointer to start the second half, and the Red Devils put together some strong offensive sets, working the ball inside to Lesher and Mairead Donahue (Trumbull, Conn./St. Joseph).
Dickinson played nearly even with the Bullets in the third quarter. A three-pointer at the buzzer put Gettysburg up 68-42, at the end of the period.
Emily Padalino (West Sand Lake, N.Y./Albany Academy) came alive on the offensive end and Donahue continued to play well in the paint throughout the final quarter.
Lesher finished with 17 points and six rebounds, going 5-for-7 from the line. Skerritt hit a pair of three-pointers, reaching double-figures with 10 points to go with three assists.
Donahue tallied nine points and a pair of rebounds while Padalino added eight points and four rebounds. First-year Halle Maeda (Santa Monica, Calif./Mira Costa) grabbed four rebounds and handed out three assists.
Gettysburg improves to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils slip to 2-5 on the season and 2-2 in the conference. They return home to host Johns Hopkins University on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 pm.
