Devils Outlast Bears to Clinch Playoff Bid

(Collegeville, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team came out on top of a thrilling overtime match-up at Ursinus College on Saturday afternoon. The Bears rallied at the end of regulation to tie the game at the buzzer and force overtime, but the Red Devils outscored the hosts, 13-5, in the extra period to claim a 71-63 win.

The first quarter was close the whole way. Junior Mackenzie Skerritt (Hightstown, N.J./The Peddie School) gave Dickinson a 7-6 lead with a three-pointer at the midpoint of the period. The Bears answered and pulled in front, 16-12, at the first break.

Ursinus stretched the lead to nine, early in the second quarter before back-to-back scores from Hannah Heiring (Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata) and Kassidy Lesher (Shoemakersville, Pa./Hamburg) made the score, 21-16, with 8:20 remaining in the half.

The Bears built the lead back to nine but the Devils would rally to pull within two at halftime. Senior Mary Martin (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) led the way with Heiring adding a late three-pointer as the Devils trailed, 28-26, at the break.

The Red Devils made a strong run at the end of the third period, going on a 10-0 run to lead, 46-36. First-year Lauren McBride (Trenton, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) started the run and combined with Helen Roberts (Oakton, Va./Oakton) for back-to-back three-pointers in the final 1:22 to stretch the margin to double-figures.

McBride struck again to open the fourth before the Bears answered with an 8-0 run over the next four minutes. Ursinus would cut the margin to just one on a three-point play from Toni Suler, with 2:09 remaining in regulation.

Skerritt converted a pair of field-goals around two free throws from Roberts to put the Red Devils up by seven, with just 24 seconds left to play. The Bears would answer, however, as Libby Lannon converted a three-point play and scored twice in the final six seconds to force overtime.

The Red Devils took control in the extra fream. Martin stretched the lead to six with a three-point play and a lay-up, and Lesher added a free throw for a seven-point advantage.

Rachel Guy countered for the Bears, cutting the deficit to four with a three-point play of her own, with 1:11 on the clock.

The Devils closed things out with a Heiring lay-up, and free throws from Lesher and Roberts for the final margin of 71-63.

Martin led a balanced offensive attack with 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals. Lesher finished with a double-double, scoring 14 points and controlling 12 rebounds while going 6-for-8 from the free throw line.

Roberts finished with 12 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals while Heiring reached double-figures with 11 points and five rebounds. McBride netted nine points to go with four rebounds and three blocked shots. Skerritt tallied seven points and four rebounds.

Lannon led Ursinus with a game-high 19 points, nine rebounds and four steals as the Bears fall to 13-11 overall and 11-8 in the Centennial Conference.

The Red Devils clinch a playoff spot and move into second place in the conference with a mark of 13-5, improving to 16-7 overall. The Red Devils close out the regular season schedule at home, hosting Franklin & Marshall at 6:00 pm on Wednesday night and Washington College on Saturday, at 2:00 pm.
