Mekic Free Throws Lead Devils to Thrilling Victory

 

 

(Carlisle, Pa.) –The Dickinson women's basketball team pulled out a thrilling victory over visiting Washington College on Saturday afternoon. Senior guard Belma Mekic (Sarajevo, Bosnia/Cedar Cliff, Pa.) converted a pair of free throws with just two seconds remaining to give the Red Devils a 56-55 win.

 

Mekic turned in an outstanding performance, scoring a game-high 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Mekic went 8-fo-10 from the line, adding six rebounds, an assist, a block, and steal at the end of the game to secure the win.

 

The score was close throughout the entire game. The Red Devils trailed, 4-0, early on and gained their biggest advantage of the first half at the 3:12 mark, pulling in front, 23-18. Dickinson held a 25-21 advantage as the teams headed into halftime.

 

Washington opened the second half with an 8-1 run, taking over the lead, 32-28, with 16:55 remaining. Dickinson would answer again and the teams would trade leads over the final eight minutes. The game saw nine ties with the final knot coming on Mekic's first free throw with two seconds left.

 

Carley Kendall tied the game with a pair of free throws at the 1:16 mark, making the score, 53-53. Claire Mattox drove the lane and scored to put the Shorewomen up by a bucket, with just 20 seconds to play.

 

Senior Dana Walsh (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) hit one-of-two free throws to cut the lead to, 55-54, with just four seconds on the clock. Dickinson was forced to foul, putting Latisha Pledger on the line. She missed the front end of a 1-and-1, and fouled Mekic, who controlled the rebound.

 

Mekic calmly sank the first, but would have to wait for the second as Washington called timeout. Following the timeout, Mekic drained the second to put Dickinson up, 56-55. She intercepted the long inbound pass by Washington and held on until time ran out.

 

Walsh finished with 10 points and eight rebounds on the day, adding a pair of assists and a blocked shot. Senior Bridget Borgese (Swarthmore, Pa./Notre Dame de Namur) reached double-figures with 12 points while classmate Lindsay Finnerty (Tenafly, N.J./Tenafly) added eight points with another solid performance as well. She made a key steal, late in the game to pull the Devils even.

 

Kelly Mitchell hit four three-pointers to lead Washington (10-10, 8-8) with 16 points. Ashley Espinoza added 12 points and Peldger controlled a game-high 11 rebounds.

 

The Red Devils improve to 12-7 overall and 8-8 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Muhlenberg College for a 7:30 tip-off on Tuesday night.
