Determined Terror Top Devils 58-46
(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College women's basketball team ran into a determined McDaniel squad on Thursday night, falling 58-46.
McDaniel took an early 8-4 lead before the Devils answered to pull in front, 13-8, with 13:34 to play in the first half. An 8-0 run put the Green Terror back on top, 16-13, with 8:57 on the clock.
The lead changed hands over the final eight minutes of the half. McDaniel closed out the first stanza with an 8-1 run to hold a 32-24 advantage at the break.
McDaniel built the lead to 11 before trading baskets with the Devils to lead 44-33 with 11:48 remaining. Dickinson rallied with a 10-2 run to pull within a possession, 46-43, at the 7:25 mark.
That would be as close as they could get as the Terror slowly stretched the lead back to 11 with 1:59 left. They hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
junior Belma Mekic (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) led the Red Devils with 12 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Classmate Bridget Borgese (Swarthmore, Pa./Notre Dame de Namur) reached double-figures as well with 10 points, adding four rebounds and a pair of steals on the night.
Senior Taylor Miller (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) tallied six points, six rebounds and five assists. First-year Gillian Ferko (Palmerton, Pa./Marian Catholic) scored five points and had five rebounds while classmate Liz Schultz (Dunmore, Pa./Scranton Prep) added five points and four rebounds.
First-year Emma Wingerd scored a game-high 15 points, adding nine rebounds, four blocks and two steals to lead McDaniel, 5-1, 3-0.
The Red Devils slip to 1-6 overall and 1-2 in the Centennial Conference. They are home again on Saturday, hosting Johns Hopkins at 2:00 pm.
Saturday will be the Red Devils' Play4Kay Breast Cancer Awareness Game. The Red Devils are asking everyone to wear pink and come out to support the fight to find a cure. There will be raffles, t-shirts and other special events. Cancer survivors will be honored after the game, and all are welcome to participate.
