(Tucson, Ariz.) – The Dickinson College softball team suffered a 5-4 setback to Denison on Sunday but rebounded to top Nazareth 2-0 on a two-run homer by junior shortstop Melissa Osborn (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island).
Denison led-off the game with a double and scored two runs in the first inning. The Devils answered with one in the bottom half of the inning. Carly Jordan (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) reached on a fielder's choice and scored on an RBI single from Madison Gerish (Fairfield, N.J./Newark Academy).
Megan O'Neill (Old Lyme, Conn./Old Lyme) drew and walk and moved to third on a double by Stephanie Hammond (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville). O'Neill came in to tie the game off the bat of Bruke Mikesell (Columbia, Md./Howard).
Another double and an error led to a pair of Denison runs in the third inning. They pushed across another unearned run in the fourth to lead 5-2. First-year Jay Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) singled to score classmate Erin Owens (Fayetteville, Ga./Woodward Academy) for a Devil run in the fifth.
Jordan doubled to score Hammond and pull Dickinson within a run in the sixth. Denison would hold on for the 5-4 win to improve to 2-0.
Osborn broke a scoreless tie with a two-run shot in the fourth inning. Owens came around after reaching on a single, going 2-for-3 in the nightcap win over Nazareth.
Senior Alex Brody (Jericho, N.Y./Jericho) recorded eight strikeouts and allowed just one walk to earn the win. She scattered nine hits as the Devil defense overcame a pair of errors to keep Nazareth off the board.
The Devils stand at 2-2 overall. They are scheduled to face Marian and Sul Ross State on Monday.
