Devils Split to Open 2012 Softball Season

(Ashland, Va.) – The Dickinson College softball team split a double-header at Randolph-Macon on Sunday to open the 2012 season. The Red Devils dropped the opener 5-1 but came back to win the nightcap, 5-3.

 

Junior Carly Jordan (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) went 3-for-4 and scored to put the Devils on the board in the first inning. She singled and later scored on an error off the bat of first-year Erin Owens (Fayetteville, Ga./Woodward Academy).

 

Junior Melissa Osborn (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) went 3-for-4 on the day while first-year Stephanie Hammond (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) added a pair of hits as well.

 

First-year Katri Thiele (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) suffered the loss, surrendering three runs on just three hits. Alex Brody (Jericho, N.Y./Jericho) came on to allow three runs on three hits in three innings as well.

 

The Red Devils came back to win game two, 5-3. Five different players crossed the plate in the nightcap. The Devils scored once in the first and second innings, and rallied with a three-run fifth inning to secure the win.

 

First-year Katie Swade (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) drew a lead-off walk to start game two. She stole second and third, and scored off a sacifice fly from senior Madison Gerish (Fairfield, N.J./Newark Academy) to put the Devils on the board.

 

The Yellow Jackets answered with an unearned run in the bottom of the first. Thiele doubled and classmate Rieva Keith (Sanbornton, N.H./New Hampton School) drove her in with a double to put the Devils in front, 2-1.

 

L Bauer drove in her second run of the game with a double in the bottom of the third to even the score, 2-2.

 

The Devils capitalized on some Yellow Jackey miscues to push across three unearned runs in the fourth inning, pulling in front, 5-3.

 

First-year Jay Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) led the Devils with a pair of hits, a walk, stolen base and a run scored. Swade singled and added a pair of walks to her stolen bases.

 

Clara Ann Joyce (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) earned the start, recording a pair of strikeouts in three innings of work. Sophomore Chelsea Homa (Newton, N.J./Newton) came on to earn the win, recording three strikeouts in four innings.

 

The Red Devils stand at 1-1. They next face Denison on March 11th in Tucson, Arizona.
