Murtaugh Hits 18th Career Homerun
|(Carlisle, Pa.) - The Dickinson College softball team dropped a pair of games to visiting Susquehanna University on Tuesday night. The Crusaders won the opener, 4-2, and held off a late rally in the nightcap for a 5-4 victory.|
Junior Emma Murtaugh (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) hit two homeruns on the night. She already holds the school record, and is now tied for second all-time in the Centennial Conference in career homeruns with 18.
Her first was a two-run shot to dead center, scoring Erin King (Bowie, Md./Bowie), who reached on a single.
Kelli Holota hit a solo shot in the second inning to cut the deficit to 2-1. Susquehanna pushed across two runs in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. Holota doubled in Brennan Balfour to put the Crusaders on top 4-2.
Murtaugh and King both went 2-for-3 in the game. Denise Haines (Green Lane, Pa./St. Pius X) pitched well in the loss, striking out five in 3.1 innings.
Murtaugh launched another bomb in the bottom of the first inning to put the Devils in front early in game two. Back-to-back homeruns from Balfour and Holota gave Susquehanna a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth.
The Red Devils rallied in the bottom of the seventh, triggered by a one-out double from first-year Rachel Jordan (Medford, N.J./Shawnee).
Murtraugh drew her third straight walk of the game and Alesha Sisco (Effort, Pa./Blair Academy) doubled to left-center, scoring Jordan and Murtaugh to make the score 5-3.
Madison Gerish (Fairfield, N.J./Newark Academy) singled to bring Sisco around to score, but great throw from Holota ended the game with the Devils just shy, 5-4.
Allison Jordan (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) came on to strikeout six in four innings.
Sisco went 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Rachel Jordan added a pair of hits, including the double. Murtaugh helped her average with a homerun, going 1-for-1 on the day with four walks.
The Red Devils (7-8) are scheduled to travel to Messiah College on Wednesday for a 3:00 double-header.
