(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's and women's swim teams both won in dramatic fashion on Saturday, each needing the final event to secure a pair of wins for the Red Devils. The women placed first and third in the 400 free relay while the men's team claimed second and third to secure the victories. The women posted a 105-100 decision while the men outscored the visiting Diplomats, 104-101.
The wins also gave head coach Paul Richards the 400th victory of his collegiate coaching career. He raises his career record to 401-204-1, and has 262 combined wins in his 19 seasons at Dickinson.
The Red Devil men opened the meet with a one-two finish in the 200 medley relay. Junior Jason Adams (Kingston, Jamaica/Kent School, Conn.) swam the lead leg of the winning quartet that combined for a time of 1:39.39. Adams added a win in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.39, and placed second in the 100 free, clocking a time of 47.65.
Classmate Ed Barnard (Springfield, Pa./Haverford School) joined the winning medley relay and captured the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:17.52. He also swam the second leg of the third place free relay to help Dickinson secure the win.
Senior Kevin Chibbaro (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick Twp.) anchored the winning medley relay and swam the lead leg of the second place free relay that combined for a time of 3:18.72.
First-year Theo Hubbard (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) had another strong outing, capturing the 200 individual medley (1:58.98) and the 500 freestyle (4:53.63) events. He anchored the second place free relay to score key points as well. Senior Zach Yocum (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) touched the wall third in the individual medley with a time of 2:05.74.
Sophomore Chris Miles (Hartford, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) claimed the 200 backstroke (2:00.85) and placed second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:49.14. He also swam the second leg of the second place free relay. Classmate Cameron Phillips (Woburn, Mass./Phillips Academy Andover) joined the winning medley relay and the third place free relay while taking second in the 200 butterfly (2:05.83). First-year Brendan Walsh (Chelmsford, Mass./Phillips Academy Andover) was third in the butterfly, posting a time of 2:09.87.
The Red Devil women turned in some strong individual performances as well. First-year Caitlin Klockner (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough Regional) led the way, swimming the lead leg of the winning 400 free relay, clocking a time of 3:41.63. She also won the 200 freestyle (1:57.58) and placed second in the 100 free with a time of 54.88.
Sophomore Caroline Brennan (Madison, N.J./Madison) placed first in the 200 butterfly (2:16.13), second in the 1000 yards freestyle (10:56.43) and third in the 500, clocking a time of 4:53.63. Junior Carson Gannon (Morristown, N.J./Morristown Beard) had a similar day, joining the winning free relay, placing second in the 500 freestyle (5:21.34) and third in the 200 freestyle event (1:59.71).
Sophomore Johanna Flemming (Northampton, Mass./Northampton) anchored the winning free relay. She added a second place finish in the medley relay and touched the wall third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 56.33. Classmate Alex Melchiorre (Voorhees, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) won the 200 individual medley and joined the winning free relay. She also placed third in the 200 backstroke, posting a time of 2:16.71.
First-year Clara Russell (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) had an outstanding meet, winning the 50 freestyle (25.33), capturing second as the anchor of the medley relay and claiming second in the 200 breaststroke (2:36.83).
Senior Maky Sullivan (South Hadley, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) and Rachel Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) also swam with the medley relay while senior Jamie Bugel (McLean, Va./McLean) placed third in the breaststroke with a time of 2:38.11.
The Red Devil men improve to 9-1 overall and 4-0 in the Centennial Conference while the Dickinson women raise their record to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the CC. Both teams travel to Swarthmore College for a 2:00 pm start, next Saturday.
