#3-Ranked Dragons Top Red Devils In Mayor's Cup

(Oneonta, N.Y.) – The #25-rankd Dickinson men's soccer team traveled to Oneonta for the Mayor's Cup Classic, facing the host Red Dragons of SUNY Oneonta in the opening round on Friday afternoon.

The Dragons, ranked 3rd-nationally in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll, scored five second half goals to claim a 6-1 win.

Oneonta struck first, scoring in the 15th minute as Zachary Southworth served a well-placed cross to Witman Hernandez on the back post.

The Red Devils had a strong chance on a corner and Ryan Brown (Schnecksville, Pa./Moravian Academy) forced a save from Rayn Wilson but Oneonta would have the majority of opportunities in the first half.

Senior goaltender Jeremy Palcan (Park Ridge, Ill./St. Ignatius Prep) was tested in the net, making four strong saves.

The Dragons struck quickly in the second half, taking a 2-0 lead, just 1:51 after the break as Justin Cebollero redirected a header, off a cross from Hernandez.

The Devils had a great chance just moments later but Matt Edmonds' (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) shot was just over the cross bar on a nice strike from the top of the penalty area.

The lead stretched to 3-0 on a controversial play as Hans Purtell appeared to knock Palcan into the goal with the ball on a save off a shot from Hernandez in the 64th minute.

Things would get worse as a penalty kick led to another goal for Purtell, just over a minute later. Palcan made the read and got a piece of the ball, but it found its way in for a 4-0 lead.

Oneonta tacked on another as Cory Santangelo fed Southworth with 15:48 remaining. The Red Devils finally broke through and spoiled the shutout as Brown weaved his way into the 18 and slipped a shot inside the left post.

First-year Frederick Meagher (Southport, Conn./Fairfield-Ludlowe) came on a made a nice save at the post while the Red Devils created some strong chances in the final minutes. He finished with three on the day.

The Red Devils slip to 0-2-1 on the season. They are in action again tomorrow, facing RPI in the second round of the Mayor's Cup at 1:00 pm in Oneonta.
