Devils Down Diplomats 2-0 in First Round of Playoffs

(Carlisle, Pa.) - The Dickinson College men's soccer team won the opening round game of the Centennial Conference playoffs, defeating visiting Franklin & Marshall, 2-0 on Wednesday.

 

The #4-seeded Red Devils advance to the semifinals to face top-seed Muhlenberg College in Allentown on Friday night at 7:00 pm.

 

Dickinson struck early in the second half and held off the Diplomats, adding an insurance goal in the 73rd minute.

 

Senior midfielder Tyler Meade (Columbia, Md./River Hill) broke through to net the game-winner just 53 seconds into the second half.

 

Senior Scott Carpenter (North Yarmouth, Maine/North Yarmouth) received a beautiful pass from classmate Zach Pritchard (Dallas, Texas/Greenhill) on the left side and placed a driving shot into the far corner of the net.

 

The Diplomats had a great scoring chance on a corner late in the first half. Matt Melino (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) served a cross to the far post that was headed by Shawn Ganow (State College, Pa./State College Area) and just deflected over the crossbar by Dickinson goaltender Cody Hickok (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow).

 

Senior midfielder Eric Corsini (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) anchored a strong effort in the midfield, keying the attack for the Diplomats. He put three quality shots on goal in the game.

 

The Devils played well defensively, holding F&M to just nine shots, posting a 15-9 advantage. The Diplomats forced seven corners while holding Dickinson to just three on the afternoon.

 

Junior goalkeeper Zach Zamek (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) turned in a solid performance, making six saves. Hickok finished with seven for the Devils.

 

F&M slips to 9-6-3 overall while Dickinson improves to 13-3-2 on the season. The Devils travel to Muhlenberg to take on the Mules at 7:00 pm Friday night.

 

Number-three seed Johns Hopkins is set to face #2-Swarthmore on Friday at 4:00 pm. The Championship is slated for 7:00 pm on Saturday.
