(Carlisle, Pa.) – The #9-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team wasted little time taking control of Wednesday night's home opener at Biddle Field, turning back Elizabethtown College 20-3.
The Red Devils stormed out to an 11-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and stretched the margin to 13 before the Blue Jays broke through with just over five minutes to play in the first half.
Senior Jack O'Connell (Sands Point, N.Y./Westminster) put the Red Devils up, 2-0, just 1:05 into the contest and tallied a hat-trick by the end of the first quarter.
Brodie Phillips (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) and Joel Mayo (Glen Ellyn, Md./Berkshire) each struck twice in the opening period run while Tucker Booth (Timonium, Md./Boys' Latin) recorded his first collegiate goal.
John Lockwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) and Matt Donnelly (Frenchtown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) scored the lone two goals in the second quarter as the Devils took a 13-1 lead into halftime.
Donnelly found long pole defender Jack Doran (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford School) making a nice run at the net and fed him for the first goal of the second half. First-year Ryan Schaffer (West Caldwell, N.J./West Caldwell) stretched the lead to 15-1 with 11 minutes to play in the third.
The Blue Jays added a pair of goals at the end of the third quarter. The Red Devils controlled the final period, tacking on five goals for the final of 20-3.
Richards fed Schaffer for his second of the game while junior Zack Levin (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) scored twice and first-year Andrew Eckert (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater) tallied the first goal of his collegiate career.
Junior Cole Pellicano (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) made five saves while senior Michael Marinelli (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) came on to stop 8-of-10 shots on the night. Stroud Corr (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) closed things out in the nets.
Nate Usich (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms) had another strong performance, picking up six GBs and causing a pair of turnovers. Bobby Hartwick (Brookeville, Md./Georgetown Prep) won 16-of-18 face-offs and recorded six GBs as well.
The Red Devils improve to 3-0 on the season. They are home again on Saturday, hosting #7-ranked Cabrini University at 1:00 pm.
