Bear Attack Leads Ursinus to 14-9 Win Over Devils

 

 

(Collegeville, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's lacrosse team suffered a 14-9 setback at Ursinus College on Saturday. The Red Devils slip to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial Conference.

 

The Red Devils struck first behind an unassisted goal from sophomore Chris Menard (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley), just 35 seconds into the contest.

 

The Bears answered at the 13:05 mark, and took a 2-1 lead on an extra-man goal from Dylan Spangenberg, with 10:48 remaining in the first quarter.

 

The Devils capitalized on an extra-man opportunity, pulling even as sophomore Rob Kendall (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) finished an assist from senior Brian Gleason (Darien, Conn./Darien).

 

Tucker Noel scored for the Bears at the 5:58 mark before senior Brian Cannon (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola Blakefield) found the net off an assist from Gleason to knot the score, 3-3, at the end of the one quarter.

 

First-year Tyler Llewellyn (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) gave the Devils a 4-3 advantage to open the second period with an unassisted tally. Spangenberg led Ursinus to another extra-man goal, this time feeding Jake Weber at the 7:10 mark.

 

That triggered a three-goal run, putting Ursinus on top, 6-4. Cannon returned the favor to Gleason, feeding him with 4:22 remaining, to make the scored 6-5 at halftime.

 

The Bears took control of the game, coming out of halftime to score four straight goals, stretching the advantage to 10-5 as Spangenberg scoring goals in either end of the run.

 

First-year Chase Phillips (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) cut the deficit to 10-6, scoring off an assist from Menard, with 4:33 to play in the third. Senior Will Scott (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) answered a goal from Mark Stratton to close out the period with Dickinson trailing, 11-7.

 

Cannon struck first in the final stanza to pull the Red Devils within three, at the 12:01 mark. The Bears were on task, however, netting three straight to stretch the lead to 14-8, with 5:18 remaining in the game.

 

Cannon added another unassisted goal with 4:47 remaining, for the final of 14-9.

 

Spangenberg led the Bears (6-3, 2-1) with three goals and two assists while Weber finished with three goals and one assist on the day. James Fairchild won 11-of-21 face-offs, and goaltender Brian Neff made 14 saves to go with six ground balls.

 

Cannon tallied three goals and an assist on the afternoon while Gleason finished with a goal and two assists. Senior Carter Moore (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) claimed 12-of-23 face-offs, adding nine GBs.

 

Senior Draper Donley (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's School) controlled five GBs to go with a caused turnover on defense. Sophomore goaltender Nick Baxter (Boxford, Mass./Governor's) made 13 saves in the nets for Dickinson.

 

The Red Devils (4-5, 1-1 CC) are on the road next Saturday, traveling to Haverford College for a 3:00 pm face-off.
