Red Devils Hold Off Widener for 6-5 Win

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's lacrosse team got back on the winning track on Saturday, holding off a great effort from Widener University, coached by former Red Devil assistant, Brendan Dawson. The Red Devils held off a late charge by the Pride for a 6-5 win at Biddle Field.

The game went back and forth, almost from the opening face-off as both teams started out, deliberate and cautious on the offensive end. Strong play between the pipes and solid defense kept both teams off the scoreboard until late in the first quarter.

First-year Tyler Llewellyn (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) put one up for the Red Devils, finishing an assist from sophomore Chris Menard (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley), with 3:30 to play in the opening quarter. Senior Brian Gleason (Darien, Conn./Darien) found the net off an assist from classmate Brian Cannon (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola Blakefield) with just 29 seconds on the clock.

Sophomore Tyler White (Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Charter) dodged for an unassisted goal, early in the second quarter, putting Dickinson in front, 3-0, with 11:53 to play in the half.

Widener capitalized on a Red Devil penalty as Kyle Gratz scored an extra-man goal, off an assist from Nich Striebich. Tim Taylor cut the deficit to one, scoring on the first of three assists from senior Robert Clemens, at the 5:50 mark.

Long pole defenseman Draper Donley (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's School) picked up a ground ball at midfield and went to the cage, netting his first goal of the season, to put the Devils up, 4-2, heading into halftime.

Gleason returned the favor as the Devils netted the only goal of the third quarter. He fed Cannon, who finished a beautiful, diving shot in front of the cage for a 5-2 advantage.

Clemens found Tyler Schulte for a Widener goal to start the fourth quarter, cutting the Devils' lead to 5-3, with 13:13 remaining in the game.

White answered at the 10:52 mark, scoring his fifth of the season. The Pride countered to keep Dickinson in its sights, just 37 seconds later as Gratz fed Vince Marra for his first goal of the year, with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation.

Clemens tallied his third assist of the day, feeding Chris Sanchez to pull Widener within a goal, 6-5, with 7:42 left to play.

The Red Devils dodged a couple of strong attacking runs by Widener in the final minutes. Sophomore Graham Parsons (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) caused a turnover and controlled the ground ball to give the Devils possession, with just over four minutes remaining.

The Devils ran the clock down to almost two minutes when Widener gained possession but threw the ball away on the clear. They would have one more opportunity in the final minute but Parsons came up with another caused turnover that was picked up by Michael Smith (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield).

Smith ran the ball into the attacking third as Dickinson called timeout to settle the offense and run out the clock, holding on for a 6-5 victory.

White led a balanced Red Devil attack with a pair of goals while Cannon and Gleason each tallied a goal and an assist.

Senior Carter Moore (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) had another strong outing, controlling 10-of-14 face-offs and eight GBs. Smith came up with four GBs while Parsons caused three turnovers and tallied three GBs.

Nick Baxter (Boxford, Mass./Governor's) made his second start in goal, making 12 saves to earn the win. Mac Nestler turned in a solid performance for Widener, stopping 13 shots on the day.

The Pride slips to 1-3 overall while the Red Devils improve to even at 3-3 on the year. Dickinson takes on Denison University next Saturday at Georgetown Prep. The opening face-off is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
