(Brooklandville, Md.) – The #8-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team erupted for 19 goals in a rout over St. Mary's College on Saturday at the St. Paul's School in Maryland. The Red Devils tallied six goals in the first and third quarters, en route to a 19-5 win.
The Seahawks answered, taking a 2-1 advantage, before a 5-0 run to close out the quarter with a 6-2 lead. Taylor Cook scored his second goal of the game for St. Mary's, just 57 seconds into the second quarter before the Dickinson defense closed the door for over 30 minutes.
Meanwhile the Red Devil attack went on the offensive, opening up a 9-3 lead at halftime. The Devils owned the third quarter as well, 6-0, to take a 15-3 lead into the final period.
Junior Brian Gleason (Darien, Conn./Darien) sandwiched a pair of goals around two scores from St. Mary's Matt Tarrant. Senior Mike Reid (Ruxton, Md./Loyola) scored on a solo dodge and Gleason netted the Devils' final tally, six seconds later off a face-off win and assist from first-year Greg Castro (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield).
First-year Rob Kendall (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley) led the way in the scoring column, netting four goals and handing out an assist. Menard struck four times as well while Gleason added an assist to finish 3-1 on the day.
Senior Matt Cherry (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) handed out three assists while junior Brian Cannon (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola Blakefield) tallied two goals and an assist. Nick Leon (Chevy Chase, Md./Gonzaga) added a pair of goals as 13 different Red Devils recorded a goal or assist.
Castro won 9-of-13 face-offs and controlled seven ground balls. Junior Carter Moore (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) added six wins and four GBs.
Senior long pole Peter Zouck (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) anchored a solid defensive effort with five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Senior goaltender Greg Hanley (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) made four saves and controlled three GBs to earn the win.
Tarrant led the Seahawks with three goals. Albert Mitchell won eight of 15 face-offs and Tripp Trainor picked up five ground balls. Three different goaltenders combined for four saves. St. Mary's slip to 1-1 after a season-opening win over #11-ranked Roanoke.
The Red Devils improve to 2-0 on the season. They return home to face #5-ranked Cabrini College on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
