(Williamsport, Pa.) – The #8-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team opened the 2013 campaign with snow still flying in the air, traveling to Williamsport on Wednesday to face-off against Lycoming College. After a slow start, the Red Devils opened a 6-0 lead en route to a, 15-6, win to start the season.
The Red Devils controlled play for the better part of the first quarter, but held just a 1-0 lead after the first 15 minutes. Dickinson held a 13-4 advantage in shots, forcing Lycoming's Alex Wylly to make six saves.
The Red Devils started to get things rolling in the second period. All-American Christian Beitel (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) triggered the run, scoring back-to-back goals in a span of less than three minutes. The second was a man-down goal off an assist from classmate Brandon Palladino (Basking Ridge, N.J./ Ridge) at the 12:37 mark.
The Devils stretched the margin to 6-0, scoring twice with just eight seconds ticking off the clock. Tyler White (Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Charter) scored off an assist from Kobi Frankel (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon). On the ensuing face-off Carter Moore (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) won the draw and fed junior Brian Gleason (Darien, Conn./Darien) who tallied an assist when Will Scott (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) found the back of the net with 7:28 remaining in the half.
Dickinson closed out the scoring with 55 seconds to play as senior Jack O'Connor (New Vernon, N.J./Delbarton) caused a turnover and Gleason scored to end the half.
The Devils struck quickly again in the third, netting three goals in just over a minute. First-year Chris Menard (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) triggered the run, followed by goals from classmate Rob Kendall (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley) and long pole defenseman, O'Connor at 7:44, 6:36 and 6:25. Senior Brian Cannon (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola Blakefield) tallied an assist, finding Kendall for the second goal of the rally.
O'Connor's goal stretched the lead to 9-0. Cannon fed Menard to stretch the Devil lead to double-figures. He scored seven seconds later, off the face-off win by Moore and an assist from Kendall.
Lycoming spoiled the shutout at the 1:30 mark of the third quarter. Kendall answered, 12 seconds later, finishing another assist from All-American midfielder, Palladino, with 1:18 on the clock.
Sean Reilly assisted the first Warrior goal, and struck again with just 44 seconds to play, making the score, 12-2, at the end of the third.
Stephen Romano struck, less than a minute into the fourth quarter. Mike Cooper scored to cut the lead to 12-4, with 12:41 remaining in the game.
Reilly fed Jason Breau to pull Lycoming within seven at the 8:42 mark. Reilly fed McCaffer for his second tally of the day, making the score 12-6, with 4:39 left to play.
Senior Nick Leon (Chevy Chase, Md./Gonzaga) finished an assist from Matt Cherry (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) and Frankel connected with Scott, 46 seconds later. Gleason found senior Chris Pianko (Doylestown, Pa./C.B. West) for a final tally, as the Devils win their season opener, 15-6.
Max Pawk (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley) came on to start the fourth quarter, making one save. Palmer Murray (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) closed out the game, making two saves almost immediately after entering the game. Murray finished with four stops.
Senior All-American Greg Hanley (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) made eight saves in 44 minutes of action, adding four ground balls.
Five Red Devils scored twice on the day. Moore won 13-of-17 face-offs and matched a game-high with eight ground balls. Draper Donley (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's) controlled five ground balls to anchor the defense. First-year Greg Castro (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) added four face-off wins and a pair of ground balls.
Reilly led Lycoming with one goal and three assists. Andrew Hauk made 11 saves while Wylly finished with nine on the day.
The Red Devils (1-0) are scheduled to face St. Mary's College on Saturday at 1:00 pm. The game is being played at the St. Paul's School in Brooklandville, Maryland.
