Third Quarter Surge Leads Devils to 12-5 Win
|(Carlisle, Pa.) - The Dickinson College men's lacrosse team used a big third quarter to open the 2010 campaign with a 12-5 win over visiting Susquehanna University on Wednesday.|
The Red Devils scored five unanswered goals to start the second half, taking control of the game, 11-4. Senior Oliver Thompson (Greenwich, Conn./Bridgeton) started the run, scoring a pair of unassisted goals, less than a minute apart to start the quarter.
Classmate Kevin Murray (Silver Spring, Md./Gonzaga) tallied at the 12:33 mark before first-year Matt Cherry (Radnor, Pa./Radnor) struck twice with his first two collegiate goals.
The teams each scored three goals in the first quarter. The Devils tacked on three straight to take a 6-3 advantage in the second period.
Susquehanna capitalized on an extra-man opportunity, to pull within 6-4 at halftime.
The Red Devil defense kept Susquehanna off the board for almost the entire second half. Henry Weismantal slipped a mishandled shot into the cage with just 31 seconds to play.
Senior goaltender Tyler Magann (Easton, Pa./The Hill School)was solid in the Dickinson net, stopping six shots. SU's Jordan Daney made 21 saves as Dickinson tallied 61 shots on the afternoon.
Sophomore Chip Murray (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan)won 16-of-18 face-offs and controlled a game-high 10 ground balls. He tallied an assist to senior Chris Dodson (Bethesda, Md./Landon), scoring off the first face-off of the second quarter.
Dodson finished the day with a goal and two assists. Thompson netted a hat-trick to lead the attack.
Chris Breslin (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) anchored a solid defensive effort, controlling three ground balls. Al Golod (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) and John Haire (Darien, Conn./Darien) also had strong performances on defense, and in the Devils' transition.
The Red Devils (1-0) travel to Potomac, Maryland on Saturday to face St. Mary's College at The Bullis School. Face-off has been changed to 11:30 am.
