(York, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team had a slow start in the first half but rallied to cut the lead to one in the second before suffering a 72-59 setback in the season opener at York College on Thursday night.

The Red Devils had a cold start shooting, but the Spartans felt the chill as well, leading just 5-0, at the 14-minute mark.

Junior Mike Jurzynski (Pearl River, N.Y./The Master's School) came off the bench to spark the Devils, scoring their first bucket of the night to stall a 15-0 start from York. He came up with a big blocked shot on the other end as Dickinson started to close the gap.

The Spartans led 21-8, late in the first half but the Red Devils kept their composure and chipped away as they headed into the break.

Ryan Devine (New Egypt, N.J./New Egypt) made a nice dish to first-year Adam Drummond (Cork, Ireland/Taft School, Conn.), off a quick outlet from Elijah Wright (Orange, N.J./Orange) and hit a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 23-15, with just over four minutes to play.

Wright buried a three-pointer and junior Bryce Allen (Albany, N.Y./The Hill School) cut the lead to eight at the 1:21 mark. First-year Ryan Robinson (Vienna, Va./George Marshall) made the score, 28-22, hitting a pair of free throws in the final minute of the half.

A free throw and three-pointer at the buzzer gave York a 32-22 advantage at halftime.

Dickinson opened the second half with a 17-9 run to pull within a field-goal. York answered, stretching the lead to 59-50, but a three-pointer from Allen would trigger another Devil run to make it a one-point game.

Wright and Allen led the charge while senior Mike Hinckley (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Episcopal Academy) and Robinson come up with some big plays as well.

Three-pointers from the Spartans gave the hosts some breathing room, but the Red Devils kept answering to keep the game in reach.

Free throws gave York a 64-55 advantage with three minutes to play. They would continue to build the lead over final stretch for the final of 72-59.

Allen led the Red Devils with 18 points behind a pair of three-pointers. Wright tallied 14 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals and Devine added eight points.

Jurzynski finished with seven points, eight rebounds and three steals while Hinckley pulled down eight rebounds to go with six points on the night. First-year Chris Bates (Ellicott City, Md./Boys' Latin) controlled six rebounds in his first start.

The Red Devils travel to the Rose City Classic at Drew University next Friday. They will face Washington & Lee University in the first round of the tournament.
