Red Devils Erupt in OT for 63-51 Win

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team came through in the clutch, claiming a key Centennial Conference victory over visiting Gettysburg College, outlasting the Bullets 63-51 in overtime on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils erupted in the extra frame, outscoring the Bullets 15-3 after hitting a trio of three-pointers to start the period with a 9-0 run. They held on down the stretch, hitting four straight free throws to close out the game.

Bullets jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead before the Red Devils answered with a 10-0 run behind three-pointers from Bryce Allen (Albany, N.Y./The Hill School) and Mike Hinckley (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Episcopal).

The lead swayed between four and six for most of the half. Hinckley put the Devils up by seven with a late three-pointer and Justus Melton (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day) knocked down a triple at the buzzer to give Dickinson a 33-26 advantage at the break.

The Red Devils struggled on the offensive end in the second half as the Bullets chipped away after a quick start put Dickinson up by 12.

Gettysburg closed the gap, putting together a 13-2 run to pull in front, 46-45, with just over four minutes remaining in regulation.

The Bullets stretched the lead to three before Hinckley hit a free throw to cut the margin to a field-goal. Melton grabbed a huge offensive rebound and scored to tie the game with a minute to play.

The Bullets had a chance on their final possession but Jon Stenger (Midlothian, Va./James River) came down with a big rebound, with just two seconds on the clock. A desperation attempt from half court was off the mark, sending the game into overtime.

Allen buried a pair of three-pointers, sandwiched around a third from senior Moses Romocki (Creedmoor, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) to quickly make the score, 57-48. Melton and Romocki connected on four straight from the free throw line to secure the win.

Hinckley led the Red Devils with a game-high 19 points, hitting four three-pointers on the night. He added five rebounds, three steals, two assists and a key blocked shot. Allen finished with 17 points, six rebounds and five assists, knocking down a trio of three-pointers.

Romocki reached double-figures with 14 points behind a pair of triples. Melton tallied nine points, five rebounds and four assists. Senior Chris McNeal (Collegeville, Pa./Episcopal Academy) tallied four points and four rebounds.

The Red Devils improve to 13-9 overall and 9-6 in the Centennial Conference. They are home again on Saturday, hosting Ursinus College at 4:00 pm.
