(Allentown, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team pulled away late to win its Centennial Conference opener at Muhlenberg, 89-68, on Tuesday night. The Red Devils celebrated the holiday early, giving out 23 assists on 36 field-goals on the night.
Sophomore Bryce Allen (Albany, N.Y./The Hill School) set a school record, hitting 33 consecutive free throws, dating back to last season. He came just one shy of matching the conference record of 34, set by Swarthmore's Zack Yonda in 2015.
The Mules jumped out to a 7-2 start but the Red Devils rallied to pull even, 11-11, with strong play from Elijah Wright (Orange, N.J./Pennington School).
Justus Melton (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day) and Allen led the Red Devils to a 19-13 advantage, with 12:15 remaining in the first half.
Muhlenberg countered to take the lead before senior Sam Lorenzo (Sterling, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) came on to knock down a three-pointer to put Dickinson in front, 22-21, with 8:33 on the clock.
Allen triggered a Red Devil run with a field-goal and back-to-back assists. He closed out the half with his fourth dish of the game, feeding Mike Hinckley (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Episcopal Academy) on a great look to give Dickinson a 40-32 lead at halftime.
Melton hit 7-of-10 shots in the first half for a game-high 15 points. Hinckley tallied eight points while Wright handed out five assists, grabbed five rebounds and made three steals before the break.
The Devils opened the second half with an alley-oop to Moses Romocki (Creedmoor, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) for a quick, double-digit lead.
The Red Devils fed Melton inside and Allen buried a big three-pointer from the corner as Dickinson built the lead to 51-38. Romocki stretched the lead to 69-47 with a breakaway dunk at the nine minute mark, capping an 18-9 run.
Dickinson continued to keep the pressure on and remained in control to close out the game. Four players reached double-figures while Wright flirted with a triple-double, scoring nine points to go with eight rebounds, eight assists and three steals.
Melton led all scorers with 25 points on 12-of-16 shooting, adding seven rebounds. Allen scored 18 points behind a trio of three-pointers while handing out eight assists as well. Romocki tallied 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals, and Hinckley added 10 points, four assists and two steals.
Jon Stenger (Midlothian, Va./James River) combined with Lorenzo for 11 points and six rebounds.
The Red Devils improve to 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in the conference. They are on the road again on Sunday, traveling to #14-ranked Christopher Newport for a 4:00 pm tip-off.
