(Marietta, Ohio) - The Dickinson men's basketball traveled to Marietta, Ohio for the Great Lakes Invitational, opening the season on Friday night against the University of St. Thomas, Minnesota.
The Red Devils erased a 13-point deficit in the second half, coming up just short after a great rally led to a 73-68 decision.
The Tommies, who won the national title in 2016, and earned an NCAA bid last season, jumped out to an early lead. They went on an 8-0 run to take a 12-4 advantage, but the Red Devils would close the gap, led by sophomore Bryce Allen (Albany, N.Y./The Hill School).
Mike Hinckley (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Episcopal Academy) assisted first-year Ryan Devine (New Egypt, N.J./New Egypt) for a three-pointer to tie the game and later hit a jumper to put the Devils up, 19-17, with 8:42 remaining in the half.
The lead swayed with Dickinson pulling in front, 27-24, before the teams went into halftime tied at 31, with Hinckley sinking a three-pointer with eight seconds on the clock.
St. Thomas had a slight lead for the first part of the second half with Dickinson keeping the Tommies within striking distance. The lead grew to as many as 13, but the Red Devils would go on a late run in the final minute, pulling within one on a pair of free throws from Elijah Wright (Orange, N.J./Pennington School).
Solid free throw shooting down the stretch secured the win for St. Thomas.
Wright led the Red Devils with 18 points, three assists and a pair of steals. Allen tallied 13 points and handed out four assists while Hinckley added 10 points and four assists.
Justus Melton (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day) started the season with a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Moses Romocki (Creedmoor, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) was the fifth Red Devil to reach double-figures, scoring 12 points and controlling three rebounds.
The Red Devils return to action in the Great Lakes Invitational tomorrow night, facing Mt. St. Joseph's at 5:00 pm at Marietta.
