Devils Fall in Centennial Conference Championship, 60-55
(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team fell in the Centennial Conference Championship, dropping a 60-55 decision to Johns Hopkins on Saturday night.
Both teams struggled, shooting less than 38 percent for the game. The Blue Jays gained the advantage on the boards, holding a 44-32 edge, including 13 on the offensive end.
The Red Devils struck first as Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, N.J./Camden Catholic) hit a lay-up and Adam Honig (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) drained a three-pointer. The Blue Jays answered with a three-pointer from Daniel Corbett and a trio of baskets from Tournament MVP George Bugarinovic to lead 9-6.
Hopkins stretched the lead to five before the Red Devils rallied to pull in front, 18-17, with 9:24 to play in the first half. Dickinson stretched the lead to eight, late in the half before a Gene Williams three-pointer made the score 31-26 at halftime.
Dickinson came out for the second half and quickly pulled in front by 10, leading 39-29, with 17:32 remaining in the game. The Blue Jays would rally, however, making an 11-0 run to take the lead on a Bugarinovic three-point play, with 13:17 to play.
The game was tied at 44-44 for almost three minutes. Junior Steve Collins (Rydal, Pa./La Salle College) buried a three-pointer from the corner to break the dry spell at the 4:58 mark.
The Blue Jays tied the game once again, 48-48, on a pair of Connor McIntyre free throws, with 3:48 on the clock. Williams cleared a rebound and hit a big three-pointer, putting Hopkins up, 51-48.
Bugarinovic followed that with a rebound and a layup to stretch the lead to five. Wixted answered with a layup on the other end before a pair of Jimmy Hammer free throws made the score, 55-50, with just over a minute to play in the game.
Wixted scored and drew a foul, cutting the deficit to 55-53. Corbett went 1-for-2 from the line, keeping Dickinson within one possession. Two more free throws from Wixted cut the lead to just one, with 22 second remaining.
Hammer stretched the lead to three with two more free throws and the Red Devils missed a three-pointer. McIntyre pulled down the rebound and was immediately fouled. He hit both free throws to secure the win, the championship and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Bugarinovic led Hopkins with 18 points and seven rebounds. Williams and McIntyre each finished with 12 points while McIntyre added 13 rebounds on the night as well. Hopkins improves to 17-10 overall.
Wixted finished with a game-high 22 points, adding eight rebounds and four blocked shots. Honig scored 12 points to go with four rebounds and two assists.
The Red Devils slip to 21-6 overall. They will await a possible NCAA at-large bid, announced on Monday.
