Spartans Slip Past Red Devils 1-0 in Overtime

(York, Pa.) – For the third straight season, the Dickinson field hockey team went into overtime with York College, and unfortunately came away on the short end, falling 1-0 in the first extra frame.

Senior goaltender Freddie Bancroft (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) turned away back-to-back point-blank shots before Autumn Mallory slipped one into the cage in the 81st minute. Bancroft did all she could, stopping four shots in overtime and finishing with 20 saves on the night.

The Red Devils had some quality chances of their own in the overtime period, but Eve Hauptle made some strong saves as well, finishing with six on the night. Mia Scott (Mount Laurel, N.J./Holy Cross) broke free in the early minutes of OT, but Hauptle came out to make a huge stop at the top of the circle.

Dickinson was solid on the defensive end throughout the game, holding off 15 penalty corners as the Spartans tallied 30 shots. Offensively, the Red Devils had 10 shots and forced four corners.

York improves to 1-1 on the season while the Red Devils suffer their first setback to slip to 2-1 overall.

The Red Devils are on the road again on Saturday, traveling to Lebanon Valley College for a 1:00 pm start.
