Bullets Turn Back Devils, Mersky Nets Two
(Gettysburg, Pa.) – The Dickinson College field hockey team suffered a tough loss in its first road game of the season, falling to Gettysburg, 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon.
Senior Katie Mersky (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Country Day) tallied both Red Devil goals, scoring off a rebound in the 47th minute and finding the cage on a scramble with 3:08 remaining in the game.
The Bullets jumped out to an early lead as Liz Baron scored the first of her two goals in the 13th minute with a blast from the top of the circle. Emily Kleinburd redirected a blocked shot into the net to put Gettysburg up 2-0 with 15:31 remaining in the half. Baron stretched the margin to 3-0 just under three minutes later with her second tally.
The Bullets took a 4-0 lead into halftime as Sarah Cole tipped one in from the left post with just over seven minutes to play in the half. Kelly Spieker closed out the scoring for the Bullets, capitalizing on a scramble in front of the cage in the 46th minute.
Mersky answered almost immediately, netting her first just 1:16 later to spoil the shutout.
Sophomore Katy Schlechtweg (Mount Laurel, N.J./Moorestown Friends) made a pair of saves while junior Laura Hitchings (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) and first-year Caroline Kapustynski (Darien, Conn./Darien) each recorded defensive saves on the afternoon.
Gettysburg held a 14-12 advantage in shots. The Bullets forced nine penalty corners and allowed eight for the visitors.
The Red Devils slip to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to face Swarthmore College on Friday at 4:00 pm.
