Strong Start Leads Devil Hockey Past Frostburg 5-3
(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College field hockey team jumped out to an early lead and held off visiting Frostburg State, 5-3, on Friday afternoon. Five different Red Devils scored on the afternoon as they improved to 2-1 on the season.
Senior Lauren Kelly (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) put the Devils on the board early, scoring just 1:59 into the contest. First-year Celeset Pilato (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) finished an assist from junior Tanya Bellingham (Alexandria, Va./Annandale) to add another Dickinson score just four minutes later.
Pilato returned the favor, connecting with classmate Natalie Polk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) to stretch the lead to 3-0 with 28:05 remaining in the half. Dickinson sandwiched a pair of goals around a Frostburg tally to head into halftime with a 5-1 advantage.
Sophomore Katie Langan (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) found the back of the cage in the 13th minute, blasting in a pass from first-year Ally Boyington (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth). Frostburg's Rachel Merritt spoiled the shutout, scoring the Bobcats' first goal in the 21st minute to cut the deficit to 4-1.
Junior Alex Boorse (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) answered with 8:42 on the clock, netting an assist from first-year Alexandra Becker (Spring House, Pa./Germantown Academy).
Merritt would net the only goal of the second half, keeping things interesting with a strike in the 48th minute. She was assisted by Courtney Abell to cut the margin to 5-3.
The Red Devils finished strong, using strong connections through the midfield to maintain possession in the second half. Another solid effort by the Dickinson defense kept the Bobcats in check down the stretch.
The Red Devils are home again tomorrow afternoon, hosting Washington & Jefferson at 4:00 pm.
