Devils Rally, Fall to EMU 3-2
(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College field hockey team rallied from a 3-1 deficit but could not catch visiting Eastern Mennonite University, falling 3-2 on Saturday.
The Red Devils turned in a strong performance, following a solid effort in a 2-1 win over Bridgewater College on Friday afternoon. EMU struck early as Jenna Longenecker assisted Becca Longenecker just five minutes into the contest to put the Royals on the board.
Dickinson tied the game as first-year Celeste Pilato (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) tallied her third goal of the season with an assist from classmate Caroline Kapustynski (Darien, Conn./Darien) with 7:20 remaining in the first half.
EMU stretched the lead to 3-1 behind a goal and an assist from Nicole Bencsik. Bencsik assisted Jenna Longenecker in the 38th minute and then netted an insurance goal off an assist from Valerie Landis with just over nine minutes to play.
The Red Devils made a strong push to rally, forcing a corner in the 66th minute. Junior Tanya Bellingham (Alexandria, Va./Annandale) finished a double-assist from Laura Hitchings (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) and Lauren Kelly (Lititz, Pa./Warwick).
The Devils continued to battle, creating a number of opportunities down the stretch. The Royals' defense held, however, as they improve to 1-1 on the season with a 3-2 decision.
EMU held just a 16-15 advantage in shots while Dickinson forced nine corners while allowing eight. Mary Beth Danaher made nine saves while Dickinson's Katy Schlechtweg (Mount Laurel, Md./Moorestown Friends) stopped seven shots for the Devils.
The Red Devils (1-1) are home again next weekend, hosting Frostburg State University on Friday at 4:00 pm. They will take on Washington & Jefferson University on Saturday, also starting at 4:00 pm.
