(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson football team scored with just 12 seconds remaining to come out on top of a 36-29 thriller with Moravian College on Saturday at Biddle Field.
The Red Devils celebrated Senior Day in dramatic fashion as senior quarterback Billy Burger (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) tossed a seven-yard touchdown to roommate Jake Walbert (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) in the corner of the end zone to lead Dickinson to the win.
Burger set a program single-game record, completing 33 passes. He was just one shy for attempts, throwing 58 times and ranks second for passing yards in a game, covering 325 on the day. He also moved into second in career completions (389), attempts (701) and passing yards (3,939).
Burger had multiple options to choose from, connecting with Walbert on eight receptions for 92 yards and another score at the end of the third quarter.
Sophomore Christopher Longo (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) made seven catches for 100 yards and a touchdown, and junior Daniel Salamone (Great Falls, Va./Langley) went 83 yards on 11 receptions. Senior Greg Oldsey (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Pennington School) had a solid day as well, making four key catches for 35 yards.
Junior James Turner (Ridgefield, Conn./Suffield Academy) anchored the defensive effort, picking off two passes and returning one 35 yards for a touchdown while senior John Minicozzi (Media, Pa./Episcopal Academy) recorded a pair of tackles-for-loss and forced a fumble.
The Greyhounds came out strong, going up 14-0 after Nick Petros caught an 80-yard touchdown pass from Christopher Mills on Moravian's first play from scrimmage. Mills ran in from 15 yards out at the 8:53 mark of the first quarter.
The Red Devils answered with a 34-yard field-goal from sophomore Trystin Golowski (Columbus, N.J./Bishop Eustace), with 3:19 to play in the quarter.
Dickinson cut the deficit to 14-10 as Burger found Longo behind the secondary for a 47-yard touchdown. Turner ended the half with his pick-six to put the Red Devils up 16-14, at halftime.
Moravian burned off over six minutes on its opening drive of the second half, scoring on a one-yard pass to Petros to take a 21-16 advantage. Dickinson countered with back-to-back scores from Jeremy Walsh (Schickshinny, Pa./Northwest Area) and Walbert to lead, 29-21, at the end of the third quarter.
The teams traded punts and Moravian took possession with 9:23 remaining in the game. Mills drove the Greyhounds 57 yards on eight plays and Roberto Diez capped the drive with a two-yard touchdown. Mills found Petros for the two-point conversion to tie the game.
The teams would begrudgingly trade possessions on punts before Dickinson took over with 4:07 to play. Burger completed seven passes on the drive, making big connections with Longo, Salamone and Oldsey before finding Walbert for the game-winner.
The Red Devils improve to 4-5 overall and 4-4 in the Centennial Conference. They are on the road next Saturday, traveling to Ursinus College for a 1:00 pm kick-off.
