(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson football team gave the homecoming crowd plenty to cheer about on Saturday, overtaking McDaniel College for a thrilling 13-10 win at Biddle Field on Saturday.
The Red Devils had a huge stop on the opening possession after a 50-yard punt return put the Green Terror on the Dickinson 23-yard line. The defense held and forced a 34-yard field-goal from Spencer Wiersberg.
The Red Devils would answer on the next drive as first-year quarterback Robert Geiss (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) scored on an eight-yard run to put Dickinson in front, 7-3, with 6:47 remaining in the first quarter.
The score held throughout the second and most of the third until a late score gave McDaniel a 10-7 lead, heading into the fourth quarter.
The Red Devils used a 60-yard punt from first-year Connor Langan (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and an interception from Erik Dettloff (Fallston, Md./Fallston) to keep the Green Terror in check for the better part of the period.
Geiss completed four straight passes as the Red Devils went 65 yards to take the lead on the opening drive of the fourth quarter. Geiss connected with Kyle Donahue (Glenside, Pa./Germantown Academy) for 26 yards and the hit classmate Christopher Longo (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) for an 11-yard touchdown, putting Dickinson back in front, 13-10, following a missed extra-point attempt.
First-year Dominic Fusco (Phoenixville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) recovered a fumble on the ensuing kick-off as the Red Devils continued to build momentum.
The Red Devils held on defense and the teams traded possessions until Dickinson took over with 4:34 remaining in the game. Strong running from Jeremy Walsh (Shickshinny, Pa./Northwest Area) and Sam Peck (N. Yarmouth, Maine/Greely) helped the Red Devils run out the clock to secure the win.
Sophomore Daniel Salamone (Great Falls, Va./Langley) had a great start and made some timely plays, rushing for 39 yards and catching three passes for another 42 on the day.
Walsh ran for 67 yards while Geiss covered 61 on the ground and combined with junior Billy Burger (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) for 103 yards passing.
Senior Tyler Heisey (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) led the defensive effort with 11 tackles while Fusco tallied nine, including six solo stops to go with his fumble recovery.
Will Koester threw for 132 yards and Matt Cathey ran for 60 yards to pace the McDaniel offense. Drew Scott finished with 10 tackles while Ray Doh added a sack and two tackles-for-loss.
McDaniel slips to 3-3 overall and 2-3 in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils improve to 2-4 on the year and 2-3 in the CC as well. Dickinson is off next weekend before traveling to Franklin & Marshall for the battle for the Conestoga Wagon on October 21. Opening kick-off is scheduled for 1:30 pm.
